History of Melton Entertainment Park
The decision of Harness Racing Victoria to explore options for a major new harness racing and entertainment complex in the Melton region arose directly from the industry’s Five-Year Strategic Plan, which was developed in 2001.
The Plan identified the need for the industry to create “racing centres of excellence” in strategic locations. In addition, it highlighted a belief within the industry that Victoria lacked a true “metropolitan home” and that Harness Racing Victoria should investigate the ownership of a metropolitan harness racing complex.
Historically, harness racing was a tenant at the Royal Melbourne Showgrounds for close to four decades, before relocating to Moonee Valley in 1976 where it remained until February 2010.
The Melton region was selected as the site for the complex because it boasted the highest proportion of standardbreds in Victoria. In addition, the Shire of Melton is one of the fastest growing municipalities in the nation, had attractively positioned land available for Harness Racing Victoria to acquire, and had demonstrated a strong framework of support for the project over a period of years.
The benefit to the Shire of Melton included capital investment, a stimulus to business and employment growth in an area of high population growth, and a world-class complex that enhances the region’s status as the harness racing centre of Victoria.
Melton Entertainment Park has been developed on this site, and features a world-class 1040-metre harness racing track, four-star hotel, conference centre, function rooms, bistro, sports bars, TAB and gaming room.
Funded by Harness Racing Victoria, the complex has been constructed on 20 hectares, with the remaining 87 hectares to eventually be commercially developed by Harness Racing Victoria as an additional revenue stream in line with the Shire of Melton’s Toolern Master Plan for the area.
